Rosemary’s dream

As I sat at the computer yesterday with my hands perched on the keyboard feeling for inspiration, I found a document I saved from 2020, nearly 2 full years before Rosemary passed away.

At that time, writing had become a way for me to process my feelings as a caregiver and I would often sit at the computer and allow the keystrokes to soothe my soul.

In the document, I found this story.

On that particular day, Rosemary was feeling under the weather and decided to go to bed a little earlier than normal.  Around 8p that evening, I heard her call out to me and I hurried to her room.  She asked me to sit on the side of the bed and said she needed to tell me something.

Rosemary held my hand as she told me she had a dream that she passed away in her sleep. She told me she was so proud of me because I managed the moment of her passing so calmly.  She said that was one of her biggest worries.

She then added with a smirk, “I died with a smile on my face too because I could SEE my mom and dad after so many years”

Why am I telling you this?

Caring for someone who is dying is difficult and those moments ( and in this case YEARS) leading up to the transition are so precious.

I am so grateful to have written down that experience to see today.

Rosemary died smiling.

Both of us were peace-filled and calm and holding hands.

And she was proud of me.

What a gift.
